Union County’s Beaver Memorial United Methodist Church was the sole recipient of COVID-19 funds.
Last year, Union County awarded the church located at 42 S. Third St. in Lewisburg $20,000 as part of American Rescue Plan Act funds (ARPA). These funds were used to repair roofs, pipes and damaged caused by a roof leak.
The Rev. said that “Baby Beaver Daycare and Kinderfolk Preschool are church programs in Beaver.” Sue Jamison is the Beaver pastor. We need to maintain the building to accommodate these programs and our other ministries. Especially the Beacon Free Shop which is a monthly gift of hygiene products. Water mitigation issues, a roof leak (which was fixed before we received these funds), and gutters of the wrong size were all problems. We applied for funds to correct those problems.”
Jamison said that the church used a portion of the grant to install gutters on the roof, and new pipes under the playground which the children use.
Jamison said, “We need to repair a problem with water between the parsonage & church because water gets under the kitchen floor of the church.” We will also fix the damage caused in the church due to the leaky roof, once the roof is repaired.
The total cost of repairs will not be known until we complete all the work. Church members are willing to donate if the cost exceeds the allocated $20,000 from the grant.
Jamison said that by receiving these ARPA funding, they would have additional funds for outreach ministries to serve their community.
Jamison said that “Commissioner Stacy Richards informed me that our request had been approved because of the outreach programs which serve the community. Especially the daycare program as there are a lot of people who need daycare services.” Our programs are available to everyone, regardless of their religious or church affiliation.

Richards said that while a number of churches asked for ARPA funding, we chose Beaver as it has food pantries and centers to support early childhood development. We knew that we would like to fund these two programs.
