Thunder Bay’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral, a cathedral in Thunder Bay, is one of most prominent structures visible from the sky.
The roof of one of the most important churches in the city is currently a bright, unmistakable blue.
St. Patrick’s Cathedral is getting a new metal roof before the summer ends, but parishioners will have to pay $1.7million in order to protect the building from the weather.
According to St. Patrick’s, it is anticipated that contractors will complete the project by the end next month.
The original 1963 roof of the Cathedral has needed periodic repair due to wind blowing rubber sheets off. This exposed concrete and allowed plywood to rot.
Deacon Derek West said that the church needed the help of businesses, individuals, and organizations in the area to repay loans on this project, as well as other $700,000.00 worth of work.
The building in question is one of Thunder Bay’s most iconic landmarks. I don’t think it’s wrong to use the term. The building has an interesting history. The knave, the window in the middle of the building is the largest one like it anywhere in North America. We’re proud, and rightfully. “We want to make sure this building lasts.”
The members of the church responsible for this project say that there are many grey hairs in the committee, so durability of the roof is assured for life.
After the installation of a roof, you can begin to make improvements.
West stated that the side chapels of either side also need to be replaced. They leak so they must be replaced. We may work on or not the roof of the rectory as a final phase. “The decision is up to you, but the side chapels will be finished next year.”
Community members have raised about one-third of the funds needed to build the roof. However, the community will keep appealing for more donations.
The church plans to explore other fund-raising initiatives in the months ahead, such as a raffle for a 50/50 split.
