Some tenants in Greenwood Plaza are back in business, but not all after the fire that occurred in the strip commercial mall on Sunday.
Firefighters were called to 208-210 Greenwood Ave. at 10:30 a.m. Bethel Fire & EMS said on Facebook that the initial reports indicated there was fire and smoke visible from the top of the building.
The structure was spouting heavy smoke at one time as firefighters attacked from above. Bethel and crews from towns nearby like Newtown Danbury, Brookfield all worked together to put out the fire.
Eversource was working to restore electricity to the building Monday, according to First Selectman Dan Carter. The town’s building inspector and fire marshal were also present. Hearst Connecticut Media couldn’t reach the latter for comment.
Carter stated that “they got the power on the other side, and they were also there to make sure the West side of the building was up and running.”
Greenwood Plaza houses a variety of businesses including a hair salon, an insurance office, a flooring company, and a laundromat.
Carter told Hearst that there is also an apartment within the building. The blaze began in the rear of the building next to the Greenwood Avenue Laundromat, and was mostly put out by midday.
Carter stated that while some parts of the building might need smoke remediation Carter added those close to the location where the fire is reported to have started will require more extensive repairs.
He said, “Everything on the east is fine and they are working hard to restore power to the opposite side. But the middle is a mess.” The laundromat and home care agency located above the building, as well as a large area used to store items, are all damaged.
On Monday afternoon, La Diferencia Restaurant announced that they are open their regular business hours and serving “mighty” Tacos.
Carter said that other businesses within the strip mall were not so fortunate. He heard Greenwood Avenue Laundromat was “a complete loss”.
Hearst Connecticut Media was unable to reach the owner of the laundry Monday for comment.
According to an announcement on Facebook, Colonial Flooring’s showroom was temporarily closed due to damage caused by water. Colonial Flooring said it would be delivering flooring samples while they wait for scheduled installation to take place.
The owner’s daughter, who opened Paola’s Nail & Spa just five months earlier, said on Monday that they should have the salon back in business by Tuesday.
She said that they were only doing minor cleaning… touch ups on paint and disinfecting everything. Smoke had entered the building but did not cause any serious damage.
