Authorities said that the popular West Oakland restaurant Horn Barbecue suffered significant damage in an early morning fire on Tuesday, only two days after it was defaced by graffiti.
Oakland Fire Department responded to the fire in the restaurant on Mandela Parkway, 2500 Block at 4:19 am. According to an Oakland Fire Department spokesman, the fire started in the back of the restaurant. When firefighters arrived they found smoke pouring out of the roof.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
Michael Hunt, a spokesman for the Fire Department said: “We’re working with owner and staff at the fire scene to see if there are any anomalies. We will also work to get any video surveillance that could clarify the cause of the fire.”
Firefighters said the fire had been put out at 4:46 am. The rear of the single-story structure was damaged by fire, as seen from above. Fire department officials said that the fire damage to the one-story building was sufficient for the red-tagging of the structure, which would prevent any entry.
Matt Horn, the chef-owner of a nationally recognized restaurant, posted on Instagram on Monday that vandals had left graffiti on his building overnight. He also said they tried to enter the food trailer of the restaurant, but were unsuccessful.
Horn called on fellow business owners affected by criminal activity to come together and support one another. He said that the vandals were “nothing but filth” which plagued the city.
Horn wrote in his blog: “Your actions represent a disgraceful display of ignorance and disrespect, which attacks not only our business but also the fabric of our local community where you live.” You represent our worst, but I want to make it clear that you won’t define us. “We are stronger, united and determined to face your vandalism”
