TGL, a mixed-reality league featuring Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, which was originally scheduled to begin in just five weeks, has been delayed by a full year due to extensive damages to its arena.

The TGL SoFi Center’s air-supported dome collapsed last week due to a power outage, according to TGL officials. TGL’s spokesperson stated that it was too soon to assess how the incident would affect the timeline. There were no injuries and the technology wasn’t affected. The site continues to be busy.

The league will now be delayed until 2025. Sports Business Journal reports that postponing the launch of the league by just a few weeks or even months wasn’t an option because ESPN, which is expected to broadcast the league, couldn’t adjust its schedule to accommodate the new window.

A TGL spokesperson announced on Monday that the TGL’s season would be delayed until the early part of 2025. This decision was made after discussions with various key stakeholders, such as players, six ownership groups for teams, PGA Tour leaders, and commercial partners SoFi, ESPN, and Palm Beach State College. This decision was made after reviewing the short-term solution, possible construction timelines and player schedules. We remain optimistic about TGL’s future despite this revised timeline. Our players, teams, and fans will be excited to see the new venue. “We have started to update our plans and schedules, and we are confident that this extension will improve the quality of service.”

Six-teams were set to start play in the league on January 9. TGL had previously revealed details about the SoFi Center. It will have a 250,000-square-foot floor area and can accommodate 2,000 people. The dome, which will have an air support of 75 feet in height and cover the whole playing area of 97 yards by fifty yards, will also be 75 foot high. The TGL competition will consist of two teams with three players. Each team will select three active players in advance. Alternate-shot is played over 9 holes as a 3-on-3 contest, followed by 6 holes of singles where each player competes head-to-head on two holes. Matches are expected to be able to fit within a 2-hour window.

Tiger Woods, in a press release, said: “I have always believed in TGL and, as momentum has grown this year, I am even more excited for what it can be to fans around the globe.” Although the recent events will require us to adjust our schedules, I am confident that our committed players will bring this concept to life.

McIlroy added: “The delay brings mixed emotions of excitement and disappointment. We are most grateful that nobody was hurt. TGL is a project we are eagerly awaiting. While the delays are disappointing, they will give us time to regroup and refocus.

Woods, McIlroy and Jon Rahm were the 24 original players committed to competing in the first season. They included Tommy Fleetwood (Adam Scott), Shane Lowry (Billy Horschel), Tyrell Hatton (Justin Rose), Keegan Brad, SahithTheegala(Wyndham Clark), Lucas Glover, Kevin Kisner Min Woo Lee Cameron Young, Tom Kim. Jon Rahm eventually decided to withdraw citing scheduling issues.

Golf Digest has been told by sources that the league will launch its 2025 season in January.
